Winter is on the Way: Is Your Family Prepared For Stormy Weather?

Manchester, England. Cars cover, houses of snow on street. The winter storm, causing flight delays and traffic problems. It can feel a little morbid preparing for emergency scenarios, especially as in most cases, they (thankfully) don’t happen. However, nothing in life is ever guaranteed, and it’s no bad thing preparing for an emergency. Something as simple as adverse weather can prevent you from being able to go and buy the things you and your family need, so it’s always worth being as prepared as you can be- especially with the colder weather on the way. Here are just a few of the ways you can plan for winter emergencies at home.

Stockpile essentials

When bad weather is forecast, lots of people run out and panic buy lots of essentials. If you’re not organised, it’s quite possible you could get to the shop and be met with empty shelves. In bad storms, grocery stores will call off their deliveries too, and so getting hold of the things you need can be difficult. To prevent ending up in this situation, it’s worth planning ahead. You don’t need to go crazy and stockpile as though you’re planning for doomsday, but a cupboard full of essentials that will last you a week or so if you can’t get to the store is a smart move. Dried foods like pasta, rice and grains are good staples. Cans and jars of things like vegetables, tuna and sauces will all come in useful too and last a really long time in the cupboard. Don’t forget household essentials like bin liners and cleaning products and toiletries too.

Have a backup source of power or heat

If your power is knocked out for hours or even days, it can spell disaster for your family. With no electricity or heat you’re in a dire situation. Home generators are something that every home should consider, even more so if you live in an area affected by storms or regular power outages. These run on diesel and can keep you going for a number of days until your mains power is working again. If you ever end up in this kind of emergency situation, you’ll be so glad you invested in something like this. At the very least, if you have a woodburning stove or fire then ensure you’re stocked up with firewood so you can keep warm if there’s no gas or electricity for a while. Plenty of spare blankets and warm clothes would also be worth putting together.

Invest in a snow shovel

Something as simple as a snow shovel can make life much easier when the stormy weather hits. Keep your path and driveway as clear as you can to avoid slips and trips. These often sell out when the weather starts getting bad, so buy ahead of time and make sure it’s accessible when the snow begins to come down. If you already have one, bring it to the front of the shed or garage so you can grab it if needed.

The depths of winter might be a little way off, but it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead and get everything you need for when the temperature drops and the weather changes.
