Why You Should Go Apple Picking This Autumn

Multi-colored spheres hang on a New Year treeThere are plenty of fun activities that you can do during the Autumn months, especially during the school holidays with the children. One such activity is apple picking and I want to share with you today why you should go apple picking this Autumn.

It is one of my favourite things to do at this time of year and I know of many other people and families who enjoy it too. Here’s why I think you should give apple picking a try this Autumn:

It gets you out of the house

First and foremost, an activity such as this gets the whole family out of the house and into the fresh air. Sure, the kids (or even the husband!) may complain at first but they will certainly enjoy the activity after a while.

You know you’re getting some fresh air and some exercise to – what could be better?

You are getting the fruit directly

What is better than picking your own fruit? No supermarkets, no middle men – just you and the fruit.

You know that they haven’t been covered with preservatives and stuff like that to make them last longer in the supermarket and can pick and choose the best ones for you, you don’t have to settle for any bad apples.

Getting fruit directly also means you can pick the perfect apples for any apple recipes you fancy making, like my French Apple Tart recipe.

It teaches the kids about food

Focus on hand and appleKids all too often don’t realise where certain food comes from – they just know we pick it up at the supermarket. By taking them apple picking, you are showing them exactly where they come from, how they grow and often, how different they taste from the shop bought ones.

It fills up some time

If you are struggling for ideas of what to do, apple picking takes up a whole afternoon usually which makes it a fantastic activity for the whole family to do, providing the weather is on your side. If you find yourself at a loose end, why not consider it?

Lastly, you should go apple picking simply because it is fun. You can see who can collect the most in the family, see who gets the sweetest tasting one and talk about what you are going to make with them. Who wouldn’t want to do something fun like this?
