How To Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle As A Vegan

Veganism often gets a bad press. People often believe that if you are vegan, you aren’t getting all the nutrients you should be and your lifestyle isn’t as healthy as it could be. However, they could not be more wrong. Here’s how to maintain a healthy lifestyle as a vegan.

Make Sure Your Vegan Diet Is Balanced

This can be something a lot of vegans slip up on – ensuring their diet is balanced. You want to make sure that you are getting all the nutrients you need without eating animal by-products so may have to use supplements. You want to ensure that you are getting exactly what you need. If you feel that you may be missing something, it might be worth getting some vegan testing done to see if you have any deficiencies so you can add them into your diet. This link offers my lovely readers 15% discount on health testing.

As well as ensuring your diet is balanced, it is well worth researching and knowing the nutrients you need and finding out what vegan products you can get them from. For instance, green leafy vegetables or dried fruit are great sources of calcium for vegans and fortified fat spreads are great sources of Vitamin D.

Iron is also an essential part of our diet and you usually find a lot in red meat. However with this not being a possibility for a vegan diet, dark green leafy vegetables and nuts are great sources of this.

Eat A Variety

As with any diet or lifestyle change, things can get boring pretty quickly so ensure you have a varied diet. Have meat substitutes one day and then the next day perhaps have just a vegetable based dish. Don’t eat the same thing day in, day out as you will soon get fed up. Grains, fruit, vegetables. Mix it up once a while and come up with some new delicious meals.

Swap Out Refined Grains For Whole Grains

Whilst it may be tempting to keep the refined grains of white bread in your diet, whole grains are much better sources of a variety of nutrients that you need so it is better to switch to them. The extra fibre from these whole grains will also keep you fuller for longer.

Some people can switch to a vegan diet almost overnight and kudos to them. However for some people, it may take a little longer as they switch to plant based products and slowly make the transition. You need to let your body do the talking – do what comes naturally to you as your body adjusts to the changes you are making.

Plan Ahead

Despite many of the world being vegan now, it can still be difficult to get a vegan meal whilst out and about. If you know you are going somewhere, it is worth planning ahead so you know what vegan meal options will be available to you and you can choose accordingly. There is nothing worse than nothing on the menu being suitable for you.

It is also wise to plan ahead when it comes to your meals at home. Knowing exactly what you have in the house and what you’re going to be making allows you to make a more varied selection of dishes.

These are just a few tips on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle when following a vegan diet – do you have any tips?
