Eco-Friendly Ways To Renovate Your Home

Child holding house and tree in hands against spring green background. Real estate conceptEvery once in a while our homes need a bit of TLC, a little makeover in the bathroom, a touch up on some furniture. Or even a lick of paint to give a bit of new life into a room.

Instead of moving home when these things need doing, you can spend your money wisely and renovate your own home to perk it up a bit to suit your needs. Now

if you want to be savvy and save some money as well as avoid having to do the same renovations again any time soon, then you need to think about going green. Here are a few eco-friendly ways to renovate your home:

Reclaimed Wood

Having the newest and shiniest things in your house is not essential. It’s also not always the best quality nor does newer mean that it will last longer. Reclaimed wood, for example, is an excellent choice for countertops, flooring, and walls. It will save you time, money and energy that would be required to produce a similar and newer product.

Donate or Sell

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it! If you’re going to tear down walls, then have a look and see what you can re-use beforehand. It’s an eco-friendly way and will also save you money as there’s probably loads of material which you can salvage and reuse.

Light fixtures, flooring, tiles, bricks and cabinets can all be used again, in another room – or even sold to make you some money.

If you really can’t use the materials, but they’re in good nick, then don’t throw them out with the rubbish. Either sell them or donate them, someone else will surely be able to make use out of them.

People are all about upcycling these days and might enjoy repainting and re-purposing something you no longer want. Habitat for Humanity is a company who welcome all unwanted materials. They sell all their donations giving 100% of the proceeds to build new homes for the underprivileged.

Only Install Energy Efficient Appliances

If you’re buying new appliances, look for the most energy-efficient refrigerators, dishwashers and ovens. Opting for these will save you money in the long run. At the same time it is much better for the environment, so it’s a win-win!

Choose companies to buy from who consider the environment, AFM Ltd.com is an excellent example. It’s a company who are committed to achieving the highest standards of environmental performance. It aims to prevent pollution and minimise the impact of its operations.

Insulate Well

Choose high-quality insulation as well as the better insulated your home is, the warmer it will stay in the wintertime which will allow you to keep your thermostat at a lower setting, and cooler during those hot summer months.

In the summer, consider solar energy as skylights and solar panels are known to keep energy costs down. They can be used to heat, or help heat a home, and often give enough power for small items like fountains to run.
