7 Ways to Start Creating & Managing your Budget

Whether you’re planning to save up to upgrade your car or are just trying to clear off your credit card debt, you know how creating a budget and sticking to it is the way to go. Infact, it is one of the best ways to stay more in control of your finances, and even end up saving more than you usually do.

Not sure how to get started though? We’ve got you covered. Keep reading to discover 7 super effective ways to create and manage your budget.

Check Expenses

Checking your expenses before you note down your income may seem counterintuitive, but it is not! Once you calculate how much you actually need every month, you’ll be able to create a realistic budget. Break your expenses down into fixed expenses (the ones you absolutely can’t do without) and discretionary expenses.

Split Income

Next, calculate the total income of your household. Set aside the amount you need for your fixed expenses and then break the remainder into slots, keeping them for other expenses that you might need to incur.

Spending planSet Realistic Goals

If you’re creating and attempting to stick to a budget for the first time, you might want to be a bit easy on yourself and set realistic goals. Break your saving goals down into smaller chunks that are easy to handle. For instance, instead of trying to save £500 in one go, you could aim to limit the amount you spend on entertainment and shopping or maybe even start budgeting your food bill and saving the rest.

For me budgeting is one of the best ways to not only save money but also to keep track of spending. Family Budgeting has some great ideas on thinking outside the box on Shopping Hacks To Save Money.

Stick to a System

From a simple notebook and pen to dedicated budgeting apps- you’ll find tons of systems to pick from to make sure you create a budget and stick to it. Decide what works best for you. Preferably something that’s simple and easy to use, even when you’re on the go.

This one’s one of the most crucial steps of budgeting, and actually pretty easy too! Browse through your phone’s app store and choose from the many apps available that allow you to track your spending. Keeping a record of the amount of money you spend can again, help you manage your expenses much more effortlessly.

Have an Accountability Buddy

Let’s get real- for some, this can be really helpful, and for others, not so much. Having an accountability buddy when it comes to your budget can prove to be great for those who tend to spend impulsively. So if you’re the kind of person who would happily spend their savings because there’s a hot sale somewhere, this tip can really help.

Look Ahead of Time

Last, but definitely not the least, remember to look ahead of time. Even if you aren’t able to do everything as you planned to the first month, give yourself time to work things around and make the adjustment. When you do find yourself failing to stick to the budget, remind yourself of what could happen if you would!
