8 Reasons You’re Having a Hard Time Keeping Your Kitchen Clean

a dirty pile of pots in the sink waiting to be washedKeeping your kitchen clean is an important part of your daily life, however many people find it difficult to keep it clean. There may be some reasons you aren’t aware of that are causing your kitchen to seemingly be in a constant state of disaster.

Being that the kitchen is one of the most heavily trafficked areas in many homes, it’s not a shock that the mess seems to build up frequently.

1. You Don’t Clean as You Go

Cleaning is part of the cooking process. If you leave the cleaning all to the end you are bound to face a pile of pots, pans and food prep materials, leaving you discouraged and unmotivated to tackle it all. This is especially true after a large meal. Make sure that you clean as you cook, removing unused tools and cooking vessels as soon as you have finished with them. This will make it much easier to tackle the small amount of clean up after the meal.

2. The Clutter Builds up

You would be surprised by how many people use the top of their refrigerator and cabinetry to store random papers, miscellaneous items and more. The truth is, allowing the clutter to build up, makes you kitchen look that much messier. Instead of storing items in your kitchen, create a location somewhere else in your home dedicated to odds and ends that need to be sorted, preferably behind closed doors.

If you don’t clean your dishwasher or sink often, They can start to develop a musty smell. Don’t forget to clean out your dishwasher and sink drains. You can use vinegar, wipe everything down and then run it on the highest temperature to eliminate dirt, stuck on food gunk and odours.

4. The Fridge Goes Unnoticed

Sure, sometimes you give the refrigerator a quick wipe down, but if you aren’t regularly removing spoiled food and taking the fridge apart to clean any spills or dust, everything can build up. Make sure to deep clean your refrigerator often.

5. Everything but the Kitchen Sink

Face it, your kitchen sink meets a lot of bacteria. Always make sure to wipe down the faucets, knobs, inside your sink and the counters around it daily. If you skip the sink, it isn’t difficult for the mess to build up and cause odours.

6. You Forget your Range

The range hood in the kitchen is responsible for keeping the smoke from cooking at bay, however, if you don’t clean it regularly it could be contaminating your air and your food. Make sure to clean the fan, replace the filter and wipe down the range often to ensure it’s clean.

7. Towels Hang Around

It can be easy to forget to change out your dish towels frequently, but if you don’t they will develop a strong odour and spread bacteria. Make sure you are paying attention to how long your dish towels have been hanging around and change them out often.

8. The Cupboards Don’t Get Cleaned

Your kitchen cupbards house a lot of your kitchen tools and dinnerware and while you clean those before you put them back into the cabinets, are you cleaning the inside of the cabinets too? Make sure to dust and wipe the inside and outside of your kitchen cabinets frequently.

There are many ways reasons you’re having a hard time keeping your kitchen clean and it mostly boils down to forgetting some of the most important areas to tackle. Keep a running tally of tasks and check them off regularly to make sure nothing is forgotten.
