Over the years, Etsy has grown in popularity. The online marketplace has grown exponentially in recent years with many people choosing to set up their own micro business or kitchen table business. Some choose to delve in full time, some do it part time alongside another job – 32% of people in recent research have traditional fulltime jobs. It is amazing to see just how far the website has come since its conception in 2005 – thirteen years later, it supports so many independent businesses in achieving their hopes and dreams.
The infographic below talks about the reasons why people shop on Etsy – and a little bit about Etsy sellers-, curated from research undertook by Seareach. They wanted to find out how many people use the site and why they do so. The study was featured on esellercafe too – do you find anything in the information they collated familiar?
Do you sell or buy on there? What reasons do you have for selling your items on the site or for buying your gifts online?
With so many people looking to either add a little extra income alongside their full time job or people trying to find something they can do from their own home, it is little wonder that there are so many people setting up shop on there – especially when 97% of Etsy sellers in the US run their own business from home; with 32% of these people relying on it for their sole occupation and 53% working independently – but what reasons do people have for shopping on there?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, 58% of people shopped on Etsy because they wanted a unique or personalised item. Etsy is a haven of fantastic unique products from independent sellers so it is little wonder people head to the site to find something unique for the people they care about. Which is exactly why I last headed there for a personalised christening gift for my goddaughter. 40% also shopped there because of the sheer selection of independent sellers; there are always so many to choose from – 10% prefer to shop from independent sellers too.
Another reason people choose to shop on the site is because Etsy help to support micro businesses – micro businesses don’t exceed over 9 employees. It’s amazing to think that there are over 5 million micro businesses alone in the UK – in the US, it has been found that the independent workforce includes 55 million people (bonkers, right?) and they bring in $1 trillion in earnings!
I found this information fascinating and would love to know your thoughts on Etsy, either as a seller or a buyer. Why do you like it?
