Anybody that works from home will tell you that motivation is one of the biggest hurdles. There are distractions everywhere and it’s easy to just procrastinate all day instead of getting work done. That’s why a proper home office is key, so you can separate your work environment from your normal relaxing home environment. But don’t think that having a home office automatically means you’ll get loads of work done. You’d be surprised just how easily you can distract yourself from work. Luckily, there are some simple tricks that you can use in your home office to improve your productivity.
Sit Near The Window
Studies show that natural light is one of the best things for productivity. It makes you feel more positive and energized and you’ll find it a lot easier to stay focused. If you’re sat in a dingy room then you’ll be in a bad mood and you won’t get anything done. That’s why it’s best to place your desk right next to the window. Having a nice view of the outside world and getting lots of natural light in makes so much difference. It’s also good for your health because you’ll be getting a good dose of vitamin D which a lot of people that work from home are lacking because they don’t get outside as much.
Sit In The Right Chair
This is such a big one because if you’re not comfortable, you’ll be focusing on that rather than your work, and nobody wants constant back pain. A bad office chair can really affect your ability to work so don’t skimp out on it. Spend a bit of money on a decent office chair (like these ones from Eames.com) and you’ll notice a big difference. You might also want to consider a standing desk if you’re struggling with sitting all day. It’s a lot better for your health and it’ll improve your posture as well.
You’re creating a home office, not a prison cell. It should be a comfortable place that you feel at home in, so don’t be afraid to decorate it with things that you like. A room with blank walls makes you feel like you’re trapped in this boring space so why not create a nice wall gallery? As well as pictures and photographs on the walls, you can also make it functional by adding baskets and shelves for storage, which brings us on to our final point.
If you spend 2 minutes searching through a stack of papers on your desk to find something, that’s not the end of the world, is it? Maybe not, but what if you’re doing that 10 times a day? You’re wasting a lot of valuable time if your office isn’t organized which is why storage is so important in your office. Using the walls as we already saw is a good idea but a simple filing cabinet will do.
If you make these simple additions to your home office, you’ll be far more productive than you ever were before.
